    Electron beam welding was used for joining Al6061-T6 alloy, using end-fitting to side plate and fixing bar part in the U-Mo/Al plate-type fuel assembly. The welded assembly exhibited a minimum amount of distortion, but a better understanding of the effects of several welding parameters on the structural integrity of the weld were required. The contents of this study describe the relative importance and interaction between welding parameters, filler material, and beam pattern on the microstructural and mechanical properties of the EB welded joint. Understanding of the relationship between welding parameters and weld properties was accomplished by macrophotography and microstructural examination, micro-hardness testing, and mechanical tensile testing of weld specimens. The results of this study will help quantify the robustness of the EBW process for this high strength aluminum alloy and joint geometry and will help determine the protections of process deviations on weld qualities in the nuclear U-Mo/Al fuel production environment.
