ABSTRACT |
Graphs enable the buckling stress to be predicted of the cylinders when subjected to torsion alone. All cylinder lengths are covered, from infinitely long, through cylinders whose buckling is affected by their length but not by the end conditions, down to short cylinders where both length and end conditions influence buckling. The transitions between the three cases were established by a statistical analysis of the results of 168 tests extracted from the literature. The effect of internal or external pressure on buckling is treated, as is the influence of material plasticity. The data also relate to ring-stiffened cylinders, the cylinder length then being the ring spacing. A practical worked example illustrates the use of the information. |
