ABSTRACT ESDU 85034 gives curves for the flexibility of a single steel or titanium alloy bolt in a single steel, or aluminium or titanium alloy plate loaded in shear. The data can be used, as shown in a worked example, to calculate the stiffness of a single- or double-lap joint, and are also used in ESDU 85035 to determine the stiffness of multi-bolted shear joints. A Fortran program listing is provided as ESDUpac A1050 for use with other material combinations. The theoretical basis of the data treats the bolt shank as a circular cylindrical beam on an elastic foundation supporting plate and the rotational constraint at the bolt head. Comparison is made with experimental data for aluminium alloy plates. It is suggested that, if possible, the effective stiffness of the plate to be used should be determined experimentally, and a suitable test procedure is provided. These stiffness data will be particularly useful to represent such a joint when using a finite element analysis to determine the gross load distribution through a structure.
