ABSTRACT	Knowledge for operating and evaluating ion thrusters on the ground is described. Operation in space is not taken into consideration, but is commented upon where required.Firstly facilities indispensable to operation are described. These are classified into a vacuum system, power processing system and propellant feeding system; and how to choose or design each system or its parts, how to evaluate the systems and how to operate them are also described.Next pre-operation procedures and points to keep in mind when operating ion thrusters are described. Following this readers will be able to operate ion thrusters for the purpose of simple performance evaluation. Information is also provided on operation of thrusters over long periods of time and automatic operations. In terms of evaluation, simple performance evaluation, ion beam evaluation and contamination evaluation are described. The authors have endeavored to provide details on the basis of their own experience, and to present theories and list references related to other information available.
