ABSTRACT This is the Final Report on Grant NAG 3-549 and discussion is on those activities undertaken during the entire 1-yr research program which began May 1, 1984 and ended April 30, 1985 with no-cost time extension to January 31, 1986. Studies were concerned with the experimental problem of lateral jet injection into typical combustor flowflelds in the absence of combustion. All flowfields being investigated have no expansion of the crossflow (the test section to swirler diameter ratio D/d = 1), after its passage through an optional swirler (with swirl vane angle f = 0 (swirler removed), 45?and 70?. The lateral jet(s) is(are) located one test-section diameter downstream of the test-section inlet (x/D = 1). The lateral jets have round-sectioned nozzles, each of which has an area of 1/100th of the cross-sectional area of the crossflow (Aj/Ac = 1/100). Jet-to-crossflow velocity ratios of R = vj/uo = 2, 4, and 6 were investigated. Helium-bubble flow visualization, five-hole pitot probe time-mean velocity measurements, and single-wire time-mean velocity and normal and shear stress turbulence data were obtained in the research program.
